ADJECTIVE : It's KINDS

ADJECTIVE

An Adjective is a word used with a noun to add something for its meaning.

Example : 
  • The lazy boy was punished.
  • He is an  honest  man.



 Kinds Of Adjective 


* Adjective of Quality  (or Descriptive Adjective) 

Descriptive Adjectives show the kind or quality of a person or thing , as ;

  • Kolkata is a large city.
  • The foolish crow tried to sing.
Adjectives of Quality answer the question ' Of what Kind ? '

Example  : Kolkata is a city .
Question - Kolkata is a city , Of what kind?
  Answer - small or large.
( By the way Kolkata is a large city in India .)
So the quality come out to be large .
Sentence becomes Kolkata is a large city . (Adjective of Quality)


* Adjectives of Quantity 

Adjectives of quantity show how much of  a thing is meant , as;

  • I ate some rice.
  • He has little intelligence.
Words like some,much,little,enough,all, no,any,half,great,sufficient,whole,etc form Adjective of Quantity.

Adjective of Quantity answer the question 'How much ?'

Example : I ate rice . 
Question - I ate rice , How much ?
Answer   - some

I ate some rice. (Adjective of quantity)


* Adjective Of Number  (Numeral Adjectives)


Adjective Of Number show how many persons or things are meant , or in what order a person or thing stands , as;

  • The hand has five fingers.
  • Few cats like cold water.
Words like five, few, no many, all, some, most, several, first ,etc form Numeral Adjectives.

Adjective of Number answer the question 'How many?'

Example : The hand has fingers. 
Question - The hand has fingers, How many?
Answer   - five

The hand has  five fingers. (Numeral Adjective)


* Demonstrative Adjectives

Demonstrative Adjectives point out which person or thing is meant , as;

  • This boy is stronger than Charlie.
  • These mangoes are sour. 
Words like this, these, that, those, such, etc are Demonstrative Adjectives.

Demonstrative Adjectives answer the question ' Which? ' 


Example : Mangoes are sour .
Question - Which ?
Answer   - These

These mangoes are sour . (Demonstrative Adjectives) 


* Interrogative Adjectives 

What, which, whose, are used with nouns to ask questions , are called Interrogative Adjectives , as ;
 
  • What manner of man is he ?
  • Which way shall we go ?
  • Whose book is this ? 


* Possessive Adjectives 

Possessive Adjectives are used to show Possession .
  • This is our house.
  • This is their desk.

Words like  my, our, their, your , his, her, its ,etc show Possession and form Possessive Adjectives.

Possessive Adjectives are sometimes used as possessive pronouns.
